Electric door and gate system – maintenance

Electric door and gate systems have become an indispensable part of everyday life.

However, there are obligations for the operators of these systems. For example, ASR 1.7 suggests an “annual inspection of power-operated doors and gates”, but at least every 15 months. The same applies to doors that close in the same way and electric gates.

Which automated doors require maintenance?

  • Automatic sliding doors
  • Rotary vane drives
  • Folding doors
  • Revolving doors
  • Roller grilles, roller shutters, high-speed doors

What must be observed when operating gate and door systems?

Gate and door systems must always be adapted to current safety regulations – even after positive initial acceptance from commissioning. This applies in particular to systems that were put into operation before the new ÖNORM EN 16005 came into force in 2012. The ÖNORM gives priority to safety for particularly vulnerable people (children and people with disabilities). In addition, changes in the use of operating areas may mean that door and gate systems no longer meet current requirements: e.g. installation of sales counters, installation of an anti-theft alarm system, installation of various operating columns, etc.

What obligations do operators of electric gate and door systems have?

The operator is obliged to regularly ensure that employees are not exposed to any hazards. The systems must comply with the latest state of the art in accordance with the Workplace Ordinance.

The so-called traffic safety obligation stipulates that those who make buildings or properties accessible to third parties must ensure that these third parties do not suffer any damage due to foreseeable dangers.

The law therefore stipulates that inspections must be carried out and recorded in a final inspection report.

This is the only way to ensure compliance with the statutory duty of care. Periodic inspections also provide legal certainty in the event of personal injury and reduce the failure rate of door and gate systems.
