Heat pump – Maintenance

Air source heat pumps and heating systems: it is impossible to imagine modern house construction without them! Especially as they are used in buildings for heating and hot water preparation.

For optimum energy yield and the longest possible service life, regular maintenance should be a top priority. In order to maintain operational safety, heat pumps containing more than 1.5 kg of refrigerant in accordance with § 22 of the Refrigerant Ordinance must also be checked regularly every year. This inspection must be carried out by qualified persons. According to the Refrigerant Ordinance, a system test log must be kept for documentation purposes.

For systems that are not covered by the Refrigerant Ordinance, an interval check within 1-3 years is recommended, depending on the manufacturer.

Air, air-water and heat pumps must be maintained! These work with ambient air. This means that contamination of the filters and other components is unavoidable!

Depending on the federal state, there may also be different requirements.

Maintenance

The following work should be carried out during maintenance:

  • Checking the filters
  • Checking the pumps and the heat pump’s cooling circuit
  • Checking the heat transfer
  • Testing the tightness of the heating circuits
  • Testing the electrical and hydraulic connections
  • Checking the connections
  • Pressure cleaning
  • Removal of residues
  • Check and clean the condensate pump
  • Check safety circuit
  • Measure evaporation and condensation
  • Measure the current consumption of the compressor
  • Function test of the switching sequences
  • Entry in the refrigeration logbook (if required)
  • Labor Inspection Act 1993 § 2. para. 3 – for business premises

The following heat pumps should be subjected to further checks:

Air and water heat pumps:

  • Check the condensate tray and drains for dirt and blockages
  • Checking the intake and exhaust openings

Brine and water heat pump:

  • Maintenance and inspection of the heating and brine circuit filters
  • Checking the antifreeze content in the brine pipe
  • For groundwater systems, check the well water quality and water levels
