What is the function of a fire door?

Fire doors are an essential safety factor in both homes and businesses. As the name suggests, fire doors are used to isolate fire compartments and prevent the uncontrolled spread of fire in the event of an emergency. The fire door is therefore indispensable in modern building projects.

Fire doors are designed to be self-closing: They close reliably and completely to ensure a proper fire seal (room closure).

Who is responsible for a fire door?

The owner of a property is responsible for the perfect condition and function of fire doors as part of their duty of care and duty to maintain safety. As a result, the owner must commission maintenance and repair work.

The following points should be taken into account during an inspection:

  • Whether the door leaf closes properly
  • Whether the door is held open with unauthorized aids (wedges).
  • If an electromagnet is present, check whether the closing process is triggered
  • Check the door closer. It must be possible for the door to close automatically from every possible opening angle
  • Is there any obvious damage to the door?
  • All screwed-on parts must be firmly in place (locks, hinges, door plates,
    door handles, etc.)
  • Check for ease of movement of moving parts (lever handle, latch, deadbolt, hinges, door locks, electric strikes, etc.)
  • The lock latch must engage in the strike plate
  • Any existing cable transitions (smoke detector, electric lock, etc.) from the door leaf to the frame must not be damaged
  • For doors with panic function, the panic function must be checked
  • With a double-leaf door, the closing sequence must be checked when the door leaves are open
  • The door gap dimension must be checked and adjusted accordingly if necessary
  • The fire swell strips in the door and frame rebate must be present in their entirety and attached
  • For doors with glazing, glazing beads must be firmly attached to the door body
  • The frame must be firmly anchored to the adjacent wall
